In 1895, Louis Hendricks, a teacher in Tilden School asked the Richland Township Board to establish a library.  The same year a library was organized and books were purchased.  A library was set up in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Pettit.  Mrs. Lucy Carver, who shared their home, was in charge of the books.  The book collection was moved to several other homes in the area, until the library broke up with the books being given to the township schools.

Miss Mary Rauchholz applied to the Richland Township Board for permission to re-establish the Richland Township Library in 1942.  The Township Board approved this and appointed a Library Board, with Miss Rauchholz as Librarian.  She operated a small shop, Mary's Book Store at the time and she made room for a library there.  Many books in the collection were from Mary's home; others were purchased with township funds.  Soon the library took up so much space in the shop, Mary gave up the business of selling school supplies and books.  She bought a small home across from the bookstore, and remodeled it for use as a library.

Mary attended various library workshops at different colleges throughout the years, and served the people of Hemlock as Librarian.  Miss Rauchholz' interest in art, music, literature, and her love of the community helped her to communicate with and influence the children she worked with.  Mary passed away in 1967 at the age of 75 years.  Her sister, Mrs. Edna McLeish of Bay Port, MI donated the home of the library building to Richland Township to be used for library purposes.  The name of the library was officially changed to Rauchholz Memorial Library.  Mrs. Lydia Bottrell and Mrs. Helen Dittmar served as Librarians for some years.

In 1976, the Library moved to new quarters in the Richland Township Municipal Building on North Hemlock Road utilizing a building fund started in 1958.
